Raymond Richards – The Artist as Sculpture

The Artist shortly before his arrest.
World Trade Centre, Melbourne, January 1985

“Raymond Richards was nude, his body was used to create a rich and meaningful image. The moment the body is used nude in art, it lends itself to further dignity and gravity, the nude is not a subject of art, it is a form of art. The nude has become the way in which the very highest virtues and values have been imaged. The performance was very modern, very urban and yet would stir audience imaginations of something ancient.”

Patrick McGaughey, Director National Gallery of Victoria.
